Data analysis has improved many social aspects. Modern business is unthinkable without proper use of data analysis tools. Also many education and safety systems rely on this technique to solve their problems. With data mining there are more chances to improve in many ways, but there are still some obstacles that can slow down the whole process. Data mining has a typical use in the IT sector, but as the years have passed other sides have appeared and started to use data mining. The aim of this paper is to show how data mining helped profit-making and not-for-profit organizations, but also the whole society to make better decisions and find a better direction for their daily activities. In addition, there will be some limitations and challenges on the use of data mining in the modern world.
Educational Data Mining (EDM) is the process of converting raw data from educational systems to useful information that can be used by educational software developers, students, teachers, parents and other educational researchers. There is a growing interest in data mining and education systems now, turning educational data mining into a new and growing research community. This work provides the application of data mining to traditional educational systems, particular web-based courses, well-known learning content management systems, and adaptive and intelligent web education systems. Each of these systems has different sources of data and objectives for the discovery of knowledge. After preprocessing the data available in each case, you can apply data mining techniques: statistics and visualization; Grouping, classification and detection of atypical values; Mining of association rules and pattern extraction; And text mining. The success of plentiful work requires much more specialized work for educational data mining to become a mature area.
