Babu Shiv Prasad Gupt and Bhagwan Das established the university in Varanasi, on February 10, 1921, during the non-cooperation movement of freedom struggle. Originally called Kashi Vidyapith, the university was renamed Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith in 1995. It was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi.
Inspired by Gandhi's call for self-sufficiency and swaraj (self-government), Kashi Vidyapith was the first modern university organized by Indians in British India. The university, along with contemporaries like Jamia Millia Islamia and Vidyapith Gujarat, were outside the control and support of the British authorities, supported and managed entirely by Indian nationalists and educators. Attracting young Indians from all over the country, his faculty included prominent nationalists and scholars such as Acharya Narendra Dev, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Jivatram Kripalani, Babu Shriprakash and Babu Sampurnanand. Gandhi and the Indian nationalists encouraged the Indians to boycott the British-led institutions in favor of institutions entirely administered by Indians. Many prominent Indian industrialists and politicians provided financial and administrative support to the university.
Bhagwan Das was the first vice-rector. Other associates with the first board were Mahatma Gandhi, Lala Lajpat Rai, Jamuna Lal Bajaj, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta, Acharya Narendra Dev, Krishna Kant Malviya and Purushottam Das Tandon. The foundation ceremony of the Vidyapith reverberated with the recital of Vedic mantras as well as extracts from the Qur'an in the presence of educators, educated people and nationalists such as Pandit Motilal Nehru, Maulana Mohammed Ali and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
Established with the resolution to keep the institution away from government recognition and grants, the Vidyapith was awarded the status of "University considered" by the UGC in 1963. This event of the time commencing a new chapter for the institution. Babu Sampurnanand was appointed chancellor and Acharya Birbal Singh as deputy foreign minister. As Prime Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Pt. Kamlapati Tripathi initiated a resolution of the state government so that his alma mater is recognised as a statutory university; This would happen on January 15, 1974. At this point, Professor Raghukul Tilak was Vice-Chancellor and Governor of Uttar Pradesh and would become Chancellor according to U.P. University Law. At present, M.G. Kashi Vidyapith is flourishing under the powerful leadership of his current vice-rector, Dr. Prithvish Nag.
