The random early detection (RED) proposed by S. Floyd and V. Jacobson in 1993 is one of the active queue management mechanisms (AQM). The performance of RED depends to a large extent on the appropriate adjustment of at least four parameters, namely:
1. Minimum threshold
2. Maximum threshold
3. Exponential weighted relation of the mean constant
4. Probability of maximum drop
The establishment of appropriate values for these parameters is considered a challenging problem and therefore in 1999 S. Floyd proposed the soft variant of RED. Later, in 2001, S. Floyd proposed Adaptive RED, which automatically adjusts all these parameters based on network conditions.
