Pulse oximeters for home use are small, lightweight monitors that attach painlessly to the fingertip to control the amount of oxygen transported in the body. An oxygen level greater than 95% is generally regarded as a normal oxygen level. An oxygen level of 92% or less (at sea level) suggests low blood oxygen. In addition to the oxygen level, the pulse rate is also displayed. Normal values of the pulse rate for adults 60-80 beats per minute2. The heart rate may be expected to increase slightly with exercise and oxygen saturation may decrease slightly (it should remain at 90% or higher though).
Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive method to monitor a person's oxygen saturation (SO2). Although its reading of SpO2 (peripheral oxygen saturation) is not always identical to the most desirable reading of SaO2 (arterial oxygen saturation) from arterial blood gas analysis, the two are correlated sufficiently so that the method Of safe, convenient, non-invasive pulse oximetry, is valuable for measuring oxygen saturation in clinical use.
In its most common (transmissive) mode of application, a sensing device is placed on a thin part of the patient's body, usually a tip of a finger or earlobe, or in the case of a baby, through a foot . The device passes two wavelengths of light through the body part to a photodetector. It measures the changing absorbance at each of the wavelengths, allowing it to determine the absorbances due to pulsating arterial blood alone, excluding venous blood, skin, bone, muscle, fat and (in most cases) the nail polish.
