SYNOPSIS
The project “modification of pressure test fixture canopy handle assembly of the jaguar aircraft” was carried out at precision mechanical Assembly unit of jaguar machine shop, aircraft division, HAL, Bangalore.
In this project we have examined the present method of pressure test of canopy handle assembly and there are two major disadvantages.
1) Leads to leakage.
2) Time consummation is more for setup.
Then we have suggested to modified method of pressure testing of canopy handle assembly in which leakage was totally eliminated and pressure test was carried out successfully.
In this project we have tried to eliminate the leakage during the pressure test of canopy handle test by using gaskets (metallic and non metallic) with sealing devices, etc.
INTRODUCTION TO HAL AIRCRAFT DIVISION
The Division is equipped with modern infrastructure in Plant and Equipment like CAD- CAM Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Assurance and Customer support System with 2121 highly skilled personnel including more than 350 engineers working in a covered area of 2,25,000smtr.
INTRODUCATION TO CANOPY HANDLE ASSEMBLY
In the jaguar aircraft, canopy plays a vital role because it not only acts as a provided to open the cockpit door from inside as well as outside. But also it should be leak proof to avoid leaks from pressurized cabin/cockpit.
EXISTING METHOD
“A device which is used to test the canopy, for any leakage of pressure known as pressure test fixture(PTF)”
DETAIL COMPONENTS
 Fixture base.
 C-clamp.
 P.R.C (polycarbonate rubber compound)
WORKING OF PTF
 Fixing the texture base to the pressure controlling device (pneumatic pressure controlling gauge).
 Fixing the handle assembly on the fixture by using a c-clamp.
 Pouring the PRC (polycarbonate rubber compound) around the handle assembly.
 Allowing the PRC to cure.
 Remove the excess pressure inside the handle assembly and maintain the pressure 5psi for 10-15 minutes.
 Check whether the pressure leak is there or not by noting down pressure gauge reading.
DISADVANTAGES
 Improper clamping of assembly during pressure test.
 Sealing of assembly in the fixture is not proper.
 Slow application of PRC (polycarbonate rubber compound) and slow curing time of PRC leading to production delay.
 Mixture of sealant is improper.
 Seals are damaged during inspection.
MODIFICATIONS REQUIRED
 Proper design of fixture to suit with contour of the handle assembly.
 Elimination of c-clamp to avoid improper clamping.
 Elimination of PRC to avoid curing time and leakage.
SOLUTIONS IN THE SUGGESTION METHOD:
 Specially designed and fabricated base to match with contour of canopy handle.
 Clamping can be provided by means of screws provided to overcome improper clamping.
 PRC can be replaced by a permanent rubber gasket to eliminate curing time delay and avoid leakage.
The main components required are:
 Fixture base.
 Rubber gasket.
 Clamping equipment.
The clamping equipment contains:
 Supporting block.
 Screws of 10*1.5
Progress of the project
• We started our project on 1st 0f January 2011 ,
• The present progress of our project
 Designing & machine drawing of fixture is completed
 Fabrication is taking place in jaguar machine shop ,HAL.
• Date of complication will be on or before April 2nd week.
