Founded in 2002, Versatile Power designs and manufactures high quality sturdy power supplies and power supply systems for medical, industrial, military, telecommunications, semiconductor and laboratory applications. Improvising loads for bench testing and designing power supplies is often a frustrating and sometimes dangerous experience. By pushing high-strength resistors to their limits, they tend to burn banks and melt the welding connections. Many electronic charges are on the market, but they are often expensive and laboratory-type precision and often represent excess for the average designer. Incandescent bulbs make excellent charges, capable of handling large amounts of energy. In addition, they come in small packages and do not require heat sinks. In addition, because they light up, you get instant feedback, rather like an analog versus a digital meter. The disadvantage is that the resistance of an incandescent lamp changes drastically with the power input. Therefore, the power at the load must be controllable over a wide range, if the bulb should be a useful current sink. A simple approach to this control problem is to modulate a power MOSFET in series with the load in the pulse width. This design uses a four rail, 100W source with outputs of 5, 12 and ± 15V. For these voltages and power levels, 50W, 12V bulbs provide adequate charge.
