PLATONIS - A Validation Platform for Protocols and Services
#1

Advance in network technology leads to the design of new protocols and services. In order to assure successful communication among those new products, testing and validation activities for conformance and interoperability play an important role in the development and deployment of them. In this lecture, we introduce the PLATONIS platform, a platform for validation and experimentation of new protocols and services. The platform is focused on WAP protocols and services, but it is expected to be general enough to be used for other protocols and services such as those of GPRS, UMTS, and wired networks

Abstract
This project aims the development and implementation of a platform validation and testing multi-protocol and multi-services. It specifically targets the interoperability test services that integrate mobility and the Internet (WAP), as well as technologies that enable the implementation of these services (UMTS, GPRS, GSM). It is a platform that is the result of close collaboration between academia and industry. It will be open to other users: manufacturers wishing to experiment with new features and services available to academia for teaching and research.

Objectives:

Strong technological advances in the field of networks (Internet, ATM) result in the design of new protocols and new services. Moreover, in most cases, these new protocols and services need to connect heterogeneous elements that must be tested to ensure their interoperability. Test the interoperability and performance of tests of these new products become and strategic activities in the telecom software industry, not only for operators (France Telecom, Bouygues, Cegetel, Kaptech, etc..) But also for suppliers (Alcatel Siemens, Ericsson) and Tool (Tekelec, etc..).

It is also the part of manufacturers to develop activities accordingly to ensure the proper functioning of these protocols and services. Thanks to this validation and testing on real platforms that will ensure reliable services, and reduce time to market "services.

The development and implementation of a platform validation and testing multi-protocol and multi-services conducted in close collaboration between academia and industry to meet this industry need to evaluate these applications systematically on real platforms and allow scholars to test innovations on real case studies (incorporating topics such as mobility, WAP, UMTS, etc..) and new services.

We considered that mobility is the area where we will focus on the implementation of the platform. In particular, we plan to study protocols and services that integrate mobility and the Internet (WAP), as well as technologies that enable the implementation of these services (UMTS, GPRS, GSM). This choice is motivated by the experience and profile partners.

It is clear that our proposal also contributes to the future Internet, it place in a context "that must respond to the heterogeneity of needs and constraints of communication" (see report RNRT-Internet of the future). We will experiment with new protocols and new services and provide solutions to enable interoperability the most suitable (we plan to study such problems in the IP connection through GPRS, GSM and UMTS networks and services using WAP and Web).

We will also help to open new possibilities of use. Experimentation services will highlight, for example, benefits and limitations of the interfaces offered to users. The same goes for all aspects of quality of service provided.

This platform will be open to other users: manufacturers wishing to test the new features of services offered, the academic for teaching and research (training students in these new technologies and experimentation by researchers of new techniques validation).

Implementation and state of the art:

The existing platforms dedicated to interoperability testing are: the project TIPHON, ETSI, for testing interoperability large scale platform generation interfoncionnement tests conducted by Korea Telecom and the University of Information and Communication, Korea, and the platform tests Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. There are also tools in France for the generation of conformance testing: eg Test Composer Tool Company Telelogic and Verilog-Tool TGV IRISA.

These platforms are partial: in the case of TIPHON, this is a draft platform for large-scale trials regardless of validation. This platform has not yet been established. And in the case of our fellow Koreans and Chinese, features offered by their platforms are limited, either because they test only the control aspects without taking into account the data, either because certain steps are not fully developed by example the execution of tests. Tools for test generation mentioned above do not have the functionality of a platform.

We also confronted our proposed platform with platforms supported by the RNRT, namely:
VTHD (platform interconnection networks at very high speed),
Mooring (multimedia platform based on active networks),
Parol (ORB platform "open source" based on the Jonathan ORB
