The IIT Bombay Pipe Engineering course was launched in 1992. It was a professional development program developed as a joint initiative of industry and academia. This course instantly filled a gap between the requirement of the industry design and engineering industry and what conventional curriculum of established engineering disciplines of chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and so on. The course received great response from professionals who literally crowded in the course year after year and edition after edition. It continues its popularity even while it is prepared to reach its silver jubilee.
The course increased the interaction between the industry and the IIT Bombay CAD center and offered solutions to many problems in the design and engineering sector. Piping Engineering Cell was formed to focus more on this major component of process plant engineering. This cell in the Department of Chemical Engineering is now known as a one-stop solution provider for all pipe engineering problems facing the industry. Currently, the Pipe Engineering Cell offers two online courses, one on Pipe Engineering and the other on Design of Process Equipment. The Pipe Engineering course is also available in its contact form (classroom teaching) twice a year.
