A series of nuclear minicomputers could help solve Britain's growing energy crisis, instead of the $ 24 billion Hinkley project being delayed, industry developers said.
So-called small modular reactors (SMRs) use existing or new nuclear technology reduced to a fraction of the size of larger plants and could produce about a tenth of the electricity created by large-scale projects such as Hinkley.
The mini-plants, still under development, would be manufactured in factories, with parts small enough to be transported in trucks and barges to places where they could be assembled in about six to 12 months, up to a tenth of the time it takes to build Some larger plants.
"The true promise of SMRs is their modularity, they can be assembled in a factory with an explicit design that means consistent standards and predictable costs and lead times," said Anurag Gupta, director and global head of energy infrastructure consultancy KPMG .
In a nuclear power plant, heat is created when the uranium atoms are divided. Different reactor designs use this heat in different ways to raise the temperature of the water and create steam, which then power turbines to produce electricity.
