As climate change alters environmental conditions, the incidence and global patterns of human diseases are changing. These modifications to the disease profiles and the effects on human pharmaceutical use are discussed. Environmental changes related to climate are associated with an increase in the incidence of chronic diseases that are already prevalent in the northern hemisphere, for example, cardiovascular diseases and mental illnesses, leading to a greater use of associated Western medicines of great use. The victims of respiratory diseases can present exacerbated symptoms due to altered environmental conditions (for example, pollen). Toxins and respiratory infections, transmitted by water and food, including those transmitted by vectors, may become more common in Western countries, Central and Eastern Asia, and throughout North America. As new disease threats emerge, a substantially greater use of pharmaceuticals seems inevitable, especially pharmaceuticals that are not currently commonly used (eg, antiprotozoals). The use of medications for the treatment of general symptoms (for example, analgesics) will also increase. These developments should be considered in the context of other major environmental changes (eg, industrial chemical pollution, loss of biodiversity, reduction of water and food security), as well as marked changes in human demographics, including aging of the population. To identify, prevent, mitigate and adapt to potential threats, it is necessary to know the main factors underlying the changes in the use of pharmaceutical products and their subsequent deliberate or involuntary release to the environment.
