A photodiode is a semiconductor device that converts light into an electric current. The current is generated when the photons are absorbed in the photodiode. A small amount of current is also produced when there is no light present. Photo-diodes may contain optical filters, built-in lenses, and may have large or small surface areas. Photo-diodes generally have a slower response time as their surface area increases. The common traditional solar cell used to generate solar electric power is a large area photodiode. Photo-diodes are similar to regular semiconductor diodes except they can be exposed (to detect UV rays or vacuum X-rays) or packaged with a window or fiber optic connection to allow light to reach the sensitive part of the device. Many diodes designed to use specifically as a photodiode use a PIN junction instead of a p-n junction to increase the response speed. A photodiode is designed to operate in reverse bias.
