The digital multimedia satellite broadcasting system (SDMB), as studied within the European integrated project IST MAESTRO. The SDMB leverages the satellite's inherent ability to provide broadcast coverage services over global coverage to provide an efficient way to serve mobile multimedia content to a potentially unlimited audience. The paper includes an introduction to mobile multimedia markets and explains how broadcasting will help mobile operators serve the mass market. The main part of the document is dedicated to the description of the SDMB system: first the services and delivery methods are presented; An example of coverage for a European system is described. The key point of the low cost impact on the 3G mobile phone is justified as well as how the SDMB system interacts with mobile landline networks. Subsequently, techniques for improving reliability and distribution capacity are outlined. In the end, we highlight the customization of services, security aspects and management of energy savings.

The source of revenue for DMB is advertising, although some of DMB's services operate on a fee-based subscription basis, charged by the subscriber service provider. Southkorea offers a free DMB service. DMB technology is based on the Eureka 147 Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) radio standard set with additional error connection for television broadcasts, satellite radio or cell phone. Not only video and voice, but also data files and applications are also delivered through digital broadcasting. This digital transfer system is used to send data to various receivers such as radios, televisions, mobile phones or PDAs.
