SCADA(Supervisory, control and data acquisition) systems are used to control dispersed assets where centralized data acquisition is as important as control.SCADA systems integrate data acquisition systems with data transmission systems. This finds use in systems like water distribution and wastewater collection systems, oil and gas pipelines, electrical utility transmission and distribution systems, and rail and other public transportation systems.SCADA systems are designed to collect field information, transfer it to a central computer facility, and display the information to the operator allowing the operator to monitor or control an entire system from a central location in real time. SCADA systems consist of both hardware and software. hardware includes an MTU placed at a control center, communications equipment like radio, telephone line, cable, or satellite, and one or more geographically distributed field sites consisting of either an RTU or a PLC, which controls actuators and/or monitors sensors.

Distributed control systems(DCS)

Distributed control systems(DCS) like electrical distribution system uses uses a centralized supervisory control loop to mediate a group of localized controllers that share the overall tasks of carrying out an entire production process. a supervisory controller communicates to its subordinates via a control network. The supervisor sends set points to and requests data from the distributed field controllers which control their process actuators based on control server command.
The field control devices shown include a PLC, a single loop controller, a process controller, and a machine controller .
