*Protesting against this Gandhiji sat on the fast unto death in the Yerwada Jail.
*The outcome of these was Poona pact, an agreement between Mahatma Gandhi and B.R.Ambedkar on 24th September 1932 at Yerwada Jail, Pune.
*It was signed by Pandit Madan Mohan Malavya and B.R. Ambedkar.
Government of India Act 1935
*The Congress Committee did not agree to the proposals in the “white paper” issued after the Third Round Table Conference in 1932.
*Based on these proposals the British government introduced a bill in the British Parliament on 19th December 1934, which later became the Government of India Act 1935.
*The Act proposed a federal system consisting of two houses, council of states and federal assembly.
*The Act of 1935 introduced provincial Autonomy in the provinces and Dyarchy at the centre.
*The first general election as per the Act of 1935 was held in 1937,
*In the General Election held in 1937 Congress got the majority. But all the Congress ministers resigned in 1939 as a protest against the decision of Britain to drag India into the second world war.
*The Act proposed to establish a federal court and Reserve Bank.
*Despite its merits and demerits the Government of India Act of 1935 proved to be a landmark in the development of India.
*The Act laid the foundation of democracy in India.
August Offer -1940
*The August offer was declared on 8th August 1940 during the viceroyalty of Lord Linlithgow. This ensured to give dominion status and freedom to frame a constitution based on representative nature.
*August proclamation expanded the members of Governor General’s Council from 8 to 12.
*The Viceroy’s war council, consisting of representatives of British India and the Indian states, would set up.
*The Government would give due weightage to the minority’s demand in the new scheme of reforms.
*The August offer promised to grant India complete freedom after the war.
*Gandhiji launched Individual Sathyagraha due to the dissatisfaction with the August Offer.
*The congress refused to accept the offered demanded immediate self government.
