With regard to the gaps, the distance would depend on the details of the pipes of the vault. If the vault is touching only the deepest confined aquifer, the pipe to the rock will be just simple pipe without grooves and therefore the septic tanks may be very close to the vault. If the pipe has grooves to hit the water at shallow depth and in the case of shallow dug wells, there must be a distance that depends on the nature of the soil at shallow depths.
If the soil is clayey and the effluent is dispersed through a dispersion trench, the distance must be at least 50 feet. If it is sandy, the distance should be greater. In an apartment complex in Chennai, the soil was sandy and the effluent was contaminating the well even at 75 feet. Here, we diverted the water used to bathe and wash clothes to beds of beds of canna plants, the problem was solved.
