Abstract
QoS over shared media LANs has three main elements: improving current LANs for QoS, developing LANs with QoS knowledge for future purposes, and consciously optimally using the capabilities of the QoS LANs. After categorization, this paper discusses how TCP / IP is currently transported over the most popular LAN, Ethernet and how it is developed. It offers an introduction to different LAN-based access networks and packages. In the context of mapping IP QoS to the link layer, reference is made to the work of the ISETL group of IETF. The MAC protocols of shared media are discussed and an example of MAC protocol analysis is performed by studying the delay and performance characteristics of Slotted Aloha.
