Pulse-forming OFDM / OQAM systems can achieve a smaller combination of inter-symbols and carrier-to-interference (ISI / ICI) without adding any cyclic prefix compared to classical OFDM systems. Various prototype impulse conformation functions with good TFL property have been proposed and implementation issues have been addressed based on filter banks. Contrary to the classical OFDM scheme that modulates each subcarrier with a complex value symbol, OFDM / OQAM modulates a real-valued symbol in each subcarrier and, consequently, allows a well localized time-frequency pulse form under a strict TFL requirement . This allows for a very efficient way of packaging symbols that maximizes performance or improves the robustness of interference in the communication link. OFDM / OQAM has already been introduced in the TIA Digital Radio Technical Standards and is considered in WRAN (IEEE 802.22).
