Anna University is a technical college in Tamil Nadu, India. The main campus is in Guindy, Chennai. The Government of Tamil Nadu established Anna's Technology University on September 4, 1978 through Law 30 of Tamil Nadu in 1978. The new university was formed from the former faculty of engineering and technology of the University of Madras and consisted of four institutes: College of Engineering, Guindy, Alagappa College of Technology and the School of Architecture and Planning. In 1982, the current name "University of Anna" was adopted.
In 2001, under the Anna University Amendment Act of 2001, the university became an affiliated university, taking under its wing all engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. This included six government engineering colleges, three private government-assisted institutions and 426 self-financing colleges. On 1 February 2007, as a result of a Tamil Nadu Government decision, the university was divided into six constituent universities: Anna University, Chennai, Anna University of Technology, Chennai, Anna Technology University, Tiruchirappalli University Anna of Technology, Coimbatore, Anna University of Technology Tirunelveli and Anna University of Technology, Madurai. The institutes were formally established in 2010. On September 14, 2011, a bill was approved to merge universities. The merger became final in August 2012.
