Mamankam
*Mamankam was a ancient festival celebrated on the banks of river Bharatapuzha lasting for 28 days once in 12 years.
*Mamankam was held in Thirunavaya of Malappuram District.
*Mamankam is believed as one of the most prominent festivals and trade fair of Kerala from middle age.
*First Mamankam was held in the year A.D.829
*Initially Mamankam was conducted by Kulasekharas (second chera kings)
*Mamankam started during the period of Chera king Rajasekhara Varman
*Later the Status of Protector was passed to Perumpadappu Kings, then status was passed to Valluvakonathiri and finally to Zamorin of Calicut.
*Zamorin of Calicut took the Status of Protector of Mamankam in the year A.D. 1300.
*When Zamorin started conducting Mamankam, all adjoining kings send their flags to Zamorine as a proof of this loyalty, but Valluvanadu king used to send a suicide squad to assassinate Zamorin
* These suicide squad fight till death and their dead bodies were believed to buried in a well named ‘Manikinar’ and pressed and covered with the help of Elephants,-
* Last Mamankam was celebrated in the year 1755.
* Mamankam festival came to an. end with the conquest of malabar by Hyder Ali.
*Manikinar, Nilapaduthara, Marunnara, Chengampalli kalari which were associated with Mamankam were still present in Thirunavaya.'
