An automated transmission system (or, occasionally, automated transmission system, to avoid confusion with the automatic transmission of an automobile) is an automated system designed to keep a radio transmitter and antenna system operating without direct human supervision or attention during Periods.
History
In the early days of the radio, an operator, technician or electrical engineer had to attend a transmitter at any time that he was operating or could operate. Any condition (such as distorted or out of frequency transmission) that could interfere with other radio services would require immediate manual intervention; The facilities should also be monitored for any fault conditions that could damage the transmitted signal or cause damage to the transmitting equipment. As the technology improved, the transmitters became more reliable, and the electromechanical means of checking and later correcting problems became common. Regulations eventually reached these breakthroughs, and radio stations (both broadcasting and non-broadcasting, such as amateur radio repeaters) were allowed to operate unattended whenever there was such ATS installed.
Theory of operation
The system monitors conditions such as voltage, current and temperature inside the transmitter or enclosure cabinet, and often also has external sensors, particularly in the antenna. Some systems have remote monitoring points that report to the main unit via telemetry links, particularly for lower radio frequencies such as the AM radio where the spread changes from day to night. Advanced systems can monitor and often correct other critical issues such as detecting ice on antenna elements or radomes and turning on the heaters to prevent the VSWR (power reflected from an unmatched antenna on the transmitter) from reaching too high high. High-powered stations that use desiccation pumps to put dry nitrogen in their feed line (to move moisture to increase efficiency) can also control the pressure. Generators, batteries and incoming electricity can also be monitored.
If something goes wrong that the ATS can not handle, it can send help calls, via pagers, voice telephony messages or dedicated telemetry links back to a fixed point as a broadcast studio. Apart from the possibility of listening to dead air from the studio / transmitter link, an ATS does not cover programming or studio equipment such as transmission automation, but rather just the "transmitter plant".
