MAGNETIC RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY
#1

It is a step towards a new breed of computer chips that couple memory with information processing. Such chips retain data when computer is turned off, eliminating the time-consuming process of booting up information from hard drive to processor. If we can make semiconductor based magnetic memories when we turn on computer it would be like a TV set-all information will be there with no need for reloading the operating system. All spintronic computers eliminate the need for parallel processing. Computing could be accelerated and customized with reprogrammable devices. MRAM combination devices could result in pocket sized machine that surpass the performance of today’s most advanced computers. If MRAM chips are to debut, the completely different architecture will make DRAM chips obsolete and issue a new era of memory chips. MRAM solves the problem of losing data typed on computer unless it is connected to UPS, as MRAM doesn’t forget anything when the power goes out. The difference is conventional RAM uses electrical cells to store data while MRAM uses magnetic cells. There is still a long way to go before MRAM is ready for prime time. Neither IBM nor MOTOROLA for instance is expected to go into mass production until they prove that they can make 256 MB chips – the standard memory module used today. But manufacturers are certain that MRAM will become a serious challenge to DRAM’s crown.
