Generalized Cloud Print Service with ‘Access Control Mechanism’, and ‘Print job status transfer’ Using XMPP
Abstract:
In Online Operating Systems like Google Chrome OS, eye OS, cloudo, etc all applications are web apps. Therefore, in designing the generalized printing experience for such OS, we want to make sure printing from web apps is as natural as printing from traditional native apps is today. Google is going to start Google Cloud Print for their applications on Chrome OS, so this is the approach to make Cloud Print Service generalized for all Operating Systems, online Operating Systems and all applications with proper use of Access Control Mechanism for printer sharing.
Introduction:
Our goal is to build a printing experience that enables any app on any device to print to any printer anywhere in the world by making use of Access Control List, persistent messaging protocol i.e. XMPP and freely available space of Google on cloud.
This goal is accomplished through the use of a cloud print service. Apps (whether they are native desktop/mobile app or a web app) use Cloud Print Service to submit and manage print jobs. Cloud Print is then responsible for sending the print job to the appropriate printer, with the particular options the user selected, and providing job status to the app.
1. Basic architecture of Cloud Print Service:
Figure 1 shows the basic architecture for implementation of Cloud Print Service.
Figure 1: Basic architecture of Cloud Print
Computer1 will prepare document for printing and at the time of printing “The Printing Service” uploads the document on internet. Computer2 simply downloads the document and prints it as per details specified by user logged on computer1. But in this architecture there are many issues like, how it will find the specific printing device in the world? How to identify authorized user? How user will get status of print job? And much more issues. We will see all these issues and their solutions one by one.

2. Printer Identification:
In ‘Google Cloud Print Service’ Google is using Google account for registering printer to cloud print service. Here we have to use same method as Google (i.e. Register printer to cloud print service with Google account), so that printer can be identified uniquely. Each Google account is capable of using Google’s apps like Gmail, Gdocs, Gtalk, etc, so that we can access those services to accomplish this goal.
3. Creation of access control list:
Creation of access control list requires the database on separate database server. Before creating the access control list, printer ID and password must be exist in database to access Google’s cloud. So following steps are required for creating access control list:
1. Printer Registration
2. User Selection
3. Granting roles and permissions
3.1 Printer Registration:
This should be an HTTP multipart request, since the request needs to upload significantly large printer capabilities and defaults file data.
Parameters for registration:
1. Printer-Name
User readable name of the printer being registered (need not be unique).
2. Printer-ID
Identification of the printer client or proxy (must be unique).
3. Capabilities [for cloud aware printer]
Printer capabilities (XPS or PPD)
4. Defaults[for cloud aware printer]
Printer default settings (XPS or PPD).
5. Status
Status string of the printer—e.g., Out of Paper, Online, etc.
6. Description
Descriptive string about the printer.
7. CapsHash
A hash or digest value of the capabilities data. This value is useful, for example, to compare values and check whether the local printer's capabilities have changed.
8. Password:
Password of Google account of printer.
These are the parameters required to register printer with service. At the time of register access control list we are going to create access control list to share printer with many users in the world with secure approach.
