History
Parle products was established as per the confectionery in the Vile Parle suburb of Mumbai in 1929. It started making biscuits in 1939. In 1947, when India became independent, the company launched an advertising campaign, showing its Gluco brand of biscuits as An Indian alternative to British cookies. Parle-G cookies were formerly called Parle Gluco biscuits until the 1980s. The "G" in the name of Parle-G originally meant "Glucose," although a later slogan of the brand also said "G stands for genius" . In 2013, Parle-G became the first national FMCG brand in India to cross the ₹ 5,000 crores mark in retail sales. Mainly eaten as a tea-time snack, Parle-G is one of the oldest brands in India. For decades, the product was instantly recognized for its iconic wrapping of white and yellow wax paper. The wrapper features a girl (an Everest creative illustration of Maganlal Daiya in the 1960s). Now, it is available in plastic wrap. The packaging design is the same as before. When the company changed Parle-G packaging from waxed paper to plastic, they made an announcement to put the Parle-G in the aquarium. As of January 2013, Parle-G's strong distribution network covered more than 6 million retail stores in India. The Brand Trust Report ranked Parle-G as the 42nd most trusted brand in India in 2014.
The low price is another important factor in Parle-G's popularity. Outside India, it sells for 99 cents for a 418 gram package as of 2012. A more common 80-gram "snack pack" sells for as little as 15 cents in Indian stores and 40 cents in Major retailers. By 2016, packets of 56.4 grams smaller were sold as ten to a dollar in Indian stores in the United States.
