RE-ORGANISATION OF STATES
*S.K-. Dhar was the chairman of the Linguistic Provinces Commission appointed by the Govt. of India in 1948.
*Dhar Committee did not suggest language as the basis for reorganisation of states.
*In December 1948 Congress appointed a Linguistic Provinces Committee known as JVP Committee also not favoured language as the basis for re-organisation of States.
*JVP Committee. Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel and Pattabhi Sitaramayya as its members.
*However, Govt. of India was forced to create the first state based on language known as Andhra State on 1st October 1953.
*It was due to the death of Potty Sriramalu after his 56 days fast unto death.
*The creation of Andhra State intensified the widespread demand for new states based on language throughout India. So the Govt, of India appointed a State - Re-Organisation Commission in 1953 under the chairmanship of Mr. Fazal Ali and Sardar K.M. Panicker and H.N. Khunsru as its members.
*On the recommendations of Fazal Ali Commission, the State-Re-organisation Act was passed in 1956. Thus 14 states and 6 Union Territories came into force on the first day of November 1956.
Unification of Princely States
*At the time of Indian Independence there were around 565 princely states in India. All the states except 3 - Kashmir,Junagarh and Hyderabad joined the Indian Union voluntarily.
*Kashmir was annexed to India through the Instrument of Accession and Junagarh through Referendum and Hyderabad by army operation called Operation Polo.
*Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the man who ably handled the unification of India.
*The Malayalaee who helped Patel in this process was V.P. Menon.
*V.P. Menon was the Secretary to the Department of States which was formed for the unification of Princely states.
