CITIZENSHIP (Article s to 11)
*Part ll-(Article 5 to 11) of the constitution deals with the Citizenship of India.
*We adopted the idea of Single Citizenship from Britain.
*Only the citizens of India have the right to vote in Parliamentary and Assembly elections. Only the Parliament can make provisions relating to citizenship
*Parliament enacted the Citizenship Act in 1955,
Ways of Acquiring Citizenship
* According to the Citizenship Act 1955, person can acquire Indian citizenship by five ways. They are:
1.By Birth
2.By Descend
3.By Registration
4.By Naturalisation
5 . By Incorporation of Territory
Ways of losing Citizenship
*The Act also provides 3 ways by which a citizen may lose his Indian citizenship. They are
(1)Renunciation
(2)Termination
(3)Deprivation
Before applying for Indian citizenship through registration a person has to live in India for five or seven years continuously (earlier it was six months).
