There are a wide variety of electric traction systems around the world, which have been built according to the type of railway, its location and the technology available at the time of installation. Many facilities seen today were built for the first time 100 years ago, some when electric traction barely took off their diapers, so to speak, and this has had a great influence on what is seen today.
In the last 20 years there has been a gigantic acceleration in the development of railway traction. This has worked in parallel with the development of power electronics and microprocessors. What have been accepted standards for the industry, sometimes 80 years, have been suddenly expelled and replaced by fundamental changes in design, manufacture and operation. Many of these developments are highly technical and complex, whose details are therefore beyond the scope of these texts.
Because these changes have been so quick, there are still a lot of examples of the original technology around and in regular use, so I've covered these in my articles. This is useful as it helps the reader become familiar with modern things.

Power supply

For starters, the electric railway needs a power source that trains can access at all times. It should be safe, economical and easy to use. It can be used either DC (direct current) or AC (alternating current), the first being, for many years, simpler for railway traction purposes, the latter being better long distances and cheaper to install but until recently more complicated To control On the train.
The power transmission is always along the track by means of an aerial cable or at ground level, using an additional third rail placed near the raceway rails. AC systems always use overhead cables, DC may use an overhead cable or a third lane; Both are common. Both aerial systems require at least one manifold attached to the train so that it can always be in contact with the power. The electric current collectors used a "pantograph", so-called because that was the form of most of them until about 30 years ago. The return circuit is through the return rails to the substation. The lanes are at ground potential and are connected to the substation.
