Over the years sixty middle of the cooperative sector in India was responsible for the distribution of 70 percent of the fertilizers consumed in the country. Indian Farmers Fertiliser cooperative Limited (IFFCO) was recorded on November 3, 1967 as Corporation cooperative multi. On the promulgation of corporations Multistate co-operative Act of 1984 and 2002, the Corporation is deemed to be registered as a Multistate cooperative society. The company is mainly engaged in the production and distribution of fertilizer. The orders of the company provide a general framework for the activities of IFFCO as a cooperative society.

IFFCO commissioned an ammonia - complex of urea at Kalol and / factory DAP NPK at Kandla both in the State of Gujarat in 1975. Another ammonia - complex of urea was set up at Phulpur in the State of Uttar Pradesh in 1981. Ammonia - unit of urea at Aonla was commissioned in 1988.

In 1993, IFFCO has developed an extensive programme of expansion of all four plants under the aegis of the set of IFFCO VISION 2000. Aonla, Kalol, Phulpur and Kandla expansion projects have been completed in a timely manner. All projects designed under VISION 2000 had been made without the time or cost overruns. All IFFCO's production units have established a reputation of excellence and quality. Another path of growth was written in chalk to realize new dreams and greater heights through Vision 2010. As part of this vision, IFFCO has acquired the unit of fertilizer at Paradeep in Orissa in September 2005. As a result of these expansion projects and acuisition, annual capacity of IFFCO brought to 3.69 million tons of urea and NPK / DAP equivalent to 1.71 million tonnes. In the pursuit of its growth and development, IFFCO had undertaken and successfully implemented its business, 'Mission 2005' and 'Vision 2010' plans. These plans led to IFFCO becoming one of the world's largest producer and marketer of chemical fertilizers by the expansion of its existing shares, setting up Joint Venture companies overseas and diversification into new sectors.

IFFCO has visualized a comprehensive plan entitled "Vision 2020", which is currently being implemented.

IFFCO has made strategic investments in several joint ventures. Indian Potash Ltd (IPL) in India, Industries Chimiques du Senegal (ICS) in Senegal, Oman India Fertiliser Company (OMIFCO) in Oman and Jordan India Fertiliser Company (JIFCO) are important fertiliser joint ventures. In the context of strategic diversification, IFFCO has concluded several key sectors. IFFCO-Tokio General Insurance Ltd. (ITGI) is a foray into the General insurance sector. Through ITGI, IFFCO has formulated new services of interest to farmers. ' Sankat Haran Bima Yojana 'provides free coverage for farmers with each bag of IFFCO fertiliser purchased. To take the benefits of emerging concepts such as the trade in agricultural products, IFFCO has taken equity in the National Commodity and Derivative Exchange (NCDEX). IFFCO Chattisgarh Power Ltd. (ICPL) which is running is yet another incursion to move in the central zone of power. IFFCO is also at the origin of several other companies for the sole purpose of benefit to farmers.

The distribution of IFFCO fertiliser is undertaken by more than 39824 cooperatives. The whole distribution, sales and promotion activities are coordinated by the Central Marketing Office (MKCO) in New Delhi, attended by the marketing offices in the area. In addition, inputs agricultural essential for agricultural production are put at the disposal of farmers through a chain of 158 farmers (FSC) Service Centre. IFFCO has promoted several institutions and organisations working for the welfare of farmers, strengthen the cooperative movement, improve Indian agriculture.
