A mechanism is a simplified model, usually in the form of a line diagram, which is used to reproduce the movement occurring in a machine. The purpose of this reproduction is to allow the nature of the machine. The purpose of this reproduction is to allow the nature of the movement to be investigated without the imposition of the various solid bodies forming the machine elements. The various parts of the mechanism are called links or elements. Where there are two links Contact and relative motion is possible, then they are known as a pair. An arbitrary set of joints forming a closed chain that is capable of relative motion, and which can be converted into a rigid structure by the addition of a single bond, is known as a kinematic chain. To form a mechanism from a kinematic chain you must fix one of the links. However, since any of the links can be fixed, it follows that there are as many mechanisms as there are links in the chain. The technique that obtains the different mechanism by setting the different links in turn is known as inversion.
