Cement is one of the materials most used in the construction industry. In 2011, total expected global cement production was 3.4 billion tonnes. China is the largest producer accounting for 2,000 million tons of production, with India in second place (210 million tons), followed by the United States. (68 million tonnes) 1. Although widely used, cement-based materials have poor mechanical properties and are highly permeable to water and other aggressive chemicals, which reduces their durability. On the other hand, the cement industry is one of the important sources of CO2 emissions, which represents 5-6% of the global emissions of CO2 produced by man each year. However, the increasing demand for high-performance structural materials and components has led to the rapid development of new kinds of materials.
Nanotechnology can play an important role in the construction industry and ranks eighth in terms of the most significant areas of applications in nanotechnology2. Nanoengineering of cement-based materials can result in outstanding or intelligent properties. The introduction of nanotechnology into the cement industry has the potential to address some of the challenges such as CO2 emissions, poor cracking resistance, long curing time, low tensile strength, high water absorption, low ductility and Many other mechanical performance. A notable improvement in the mechanical properties and durability of cementitious materials can be observed with the incorporation of nanomaterials such as nano-SiO2, ZnO2, Al2O3, TiO2, carbon nanotubes, nano-clays, carbon nanofibers and other nanomaterials.
The micro-voids in the cement paste of cementitious material drastically reduce the load capacity of the element, due to the reduction of area. On the other hand, the weak interface between the aggregates and the mortar induces the initiation of the micro-crack and promotes the propagation of the crack. Therefore, it is imperative to reduce voids in the mortar, and promote a better degree of hydration of the cement. One method that has proven to be effective is the use of nano-cement particles. The smaller cement particles will result in a better hydration process, and create smaller ettringites and calcium hydrates. This work investigated the effect of the percentage of nano cement in the mortar mixture by means of the substitution method. The weight ratio of the nano cement to the normal cement ranged from 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. Specimens of size 50 x 50 x 50 mm were tested at the age of 28 days to obtain their compressive strength. The ratio of cement to sand was from 1 to 2.75, while a water-cement ratio of 0.485 was maintained throughout the experiments. Two types of cement, the Portland Composite Cement (PCC) and the PPC (Portland Pozzolane Cement), all Indonesia-based products, were compared to provide an overview of the general condition of cement in Indonesia and the effectiveness of using nano cement In each of the Types.
