HYBRID TECHNOLOGY AND RECUPERATION OF BRAKE ENERGY IN AUTOMOBILES
The dictionary defines a hybrid as something of mixed origin
A hybrid vehicle is one that combines a internal combustion gasoline engine with the electric motor of an electric-powered to propel vehicle.
HISTORY
In 1900 at Lohner coach Factory,Fordinand Porsche developed the MIXTE series version which won Paris auto show.
First gasoline-electric hybrid was released by Woods motor Company, Chicago in 1917.
Work’s was titled as “GOD FATHER OF HYBRID”
Regenerative braking system is the core of HEV’s it was developed by electric engineer David Authurs in 1978.
Modern era HEV’s became a widespread in late 2000’s.
TOYOTA PRIUS was the first mass produced HEV.
Why Hybid
Background
I.C.ENGINES
ELECTRIC MOTORS
What led to the development of hybrid vehicles
CLASSIFICATION
BASED ON TYPE OF RECHARGING OF BATTERIES IN ELECTRIC
PLUG-IN HYBRIDS
REGENERATIVE HYBRIDS
Hydraulic hybrids

In this pump and motor is the primary mechanism, based on the vehicles needs it can pressurize for storage in accumulator, Conversely it can operate as a motor powered by the accumulated high pressure fluid.
Of late as this could not provide sufficient output required by the power trains to drive the vehicle this technique is vanished.
ELECTRIC hybrids
In this the vehicles uses the power of gasoline engine and electric motor
coupled each other for propulsion.
1.SERIES ELECTRIC HYBRID
In this it’s the electric motor which drives the wheels but its indirectly dependent on Engines too.
2.PARALLEL HYBRID
In this configuration both Electric Motor and Gasoline engines are connected parallel to a single drive shaft .
SERIES/PARALLEL HYBRID-
This is also called as power split hybrids as both electric motor and engine this is a mix of both series and parallel with two separate gear boxes.
Advantages
Disadvantages
REGENERATIVE BRAKING
In the convectional vehicles during braking the kinetic energy will be converted to heat energy and dissipated
Studies say that about one third to one half of the energy required for the operation of the vehicle is consumed in braking.
A regenerative braking is an energy recovery mechanism that converts some of its kinetic energy during braking to electric energy to recharge the battery.
MODE OF OPERATION
During braking the electric motor switches as generator there by reduces the wheel speed and helps to charge the battery.
The main components of the power absorbing unit are -
Motor generator 1
Motor generator 2
Planetary gears
MG 1-It works as engine starter and also when engine is firing it helps to drive the MG 2
MG 2 – It helps to provide power during high speed cruising and to recharge the battery during braking.
PLANETARY GEARS – It is a power splitting device that connects MG1 to sun gear and ring gear to MG 2.
WHY IN THE FRONT
Normally the Regenerative system is mounted on the front wheels.
This is because as 70% of the force acts in the front during braking more brake force is required at the front wheels hence more energy could be recovered .
Levels of Hybridization
The lowest level of hybridization is Micro HEV’s and the full power assist are known as FULL HEV’S
