Nanomaterials in principle describe materials of which a single unit is dimensioned (in at least one dimension) between 1 and 1000 nanometers (10-9 meters) but usually is 1-100 nm (the usual nanoscale definition). Research on nanomaterials adopts an approach based on material science for nanotechnology, drawing on advances in metrology and synthesis of materials that have been developed in support of microfabrication research. Materials with nanoscale structure often have unique optical, electronic or mechanical properties. Nanomaterials are being marketed slowly and beginning to emerge as commodities.
