Fuzzy Logic Control of a Model Airplane
Common uses of fuzzy logic control today are found in relatively simple applications in products. But compared to the potential of fuzzy logic, such applications just touch the surface. It can be used for complex device control as well. A fuzzy logic fly-by-wire system has been developed in this for the control of a model airplane. In order to maintain the flight stability, a number of critical inputs must be acquired and processed quickly. the size, weight and processing power of the hardware used for this is severely limited by the payload and power constraints.
The fly-by-wire system has been studied and implemented in many previous aircrafts. In the old aircrafts, steel cables connecting the cockpit to the various control surfaces was used to control the aircraft. With fly-by-wire, control inputs from the pilot are communicated electronically to the hydraulic servos that are located near the end point to be controlled. The computer enhanced FBW systems have efficient systems checking and maintenance routines.
