The FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) method has been used to study the reliability of many different power generation systems. This document now applies that method to a wind turbine (WT) system using a proprietary software reliability analysis tool. We compare the quantitative results of an FMEA and the reliability field data of the actual wind turbine systems and their assemblies. These results are discussed to establish relationships that are useful for future wind turbine designs.
The main system studied is a 2 MW design wind turbine with a double fed induction generator (DFIG), which is then compared to a hypothetical wind turbine system using the Brushless Double Generator (BDFG) of the same rating.
A wind turbine is the device that converts kinetic energy from wind to electric energy. The wind turbine has the number of parts joined with the other and makes the complete assembly that generates the electric energy under indicated conditions. The following paper presents a reliability analysis of REpower 5M wind turbine. The 5M turbine, with a nominal power of 5 megawatts and a rotor diameter of 126 meters, is one of the largest and most powerful wind turbines in the world. The components of the wind turbine are given in the hardware details section. If we want to calculate the reliability of the complete wind turbine mount we must first find the relationship with each of the components of the wind turbine assembly, the failure mode of each component as well as its effect and criticality. For the previous year, a number of reliability and maintenance tools are available to evaluate the reliability characteristics of the turbines. These include a Mode and Fault Maintenance (FMMA) analysis, a Mode and Fault Effect Analysis (FMEA), a Criticality Analysis and Failure Mode Effect (FMECA).
