A stability constant (formation constant, binding constant) is an equilibrium constant for the formation of a complex in solution. It is a measure of the strength of the interaction between the reactants that bind to form the complex. There are two main types of complexes: compounds formed by the interaction of a metal ion with a ligand and supramolecular complexes, such as host-host complexes and anion complexes. The stability constant (s) provide the information necessary to calculate the concentration or concentrations of the complex or complexes in solution. There are many areas of application in chemistry, biology and medicine.
