As technology is merging with environmental awareness, consumers are looking for ways to contribute to the relief of their own carbon footprints. Pollution is man-made and can be seen in our own daily lives, more specifically in our own homes. The gas-powered lawn mower is 90% of the home in the United States and creates 5% of the total pollution of the United States. Green technology initiatives are being supported by both the government and cooperating companies. Our new design for an old-fashioned and outdated habit will help both the consumer and the environment. This project of a solar automatic lawn mower will feed the consumer to mow their own lawn and reduce both environmental and noisy pollution. This design is meant to be an alternate green choice to the popular and environmentally hazardous gas powered lawn mower. Ultimately, the consumer will do more for the environment while doing less work in their daily lives. The hope is to continue working on this project until an appropriate design can be implemented and then finally put on the market.
A robotic lawn mower is an autonomous robot used to mow lawns. A typical robotic lawn mower (in particular previous generation models) requires the user to configure a rim cable around the lawn that defines the area to be cut. The robot uses this cable to locate the boundary of the area to be trimmed and in some cases to locate a recharge spring. Robotic cutters are capable of maintaining up to 20,000 m2 (220,000 square feet) of grass. Robotic lawn mowers are increasingly sophisticated, self-mating and some contain rain sensors if necessary, almost eliminating human interaction. Robotic lawn mowers represented the second largest category of domestic robots used at the end of 2005.
Possibly the first commercial robotic lawn mower was the MowBot, introduced and patented in 1969 and already showing many features of today's most popular products. In 2012, the growth in sales of robotic lawn mowers was 15 times higher than traditional styles. With the emergence of smartphones, some robotic mowers have built-in functions in custom applications to adjust the setting or the scheduled mowing times and frequency, as well as manually control the lawn mower with a digital joystick.
