How did the Internet originate?
ARPANET
•Networking project by US Department of Defense, Pentagon’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA)
•To allow scientists at different locations to share information
•The network is designed such that if part of network were destroyed, it will still be able to function. (for war purpose)
•Became functional September 1969
How has the Internet grown?
o 1969- Four host nodes
o 1984-More than 1,000 host nodes
o Today-More than 150 million host nodes
Who controls the Internet?
No one—it is a public, cooperative, and independent network
