The dual tree complex discrete wave transform (DT-CWT) provides advantages over the critically sampled DWT for signal, image and volume processing. The dual-tree DWT is implemented as two separate two-channel filter banks.
Discrete Wavelet Transformation (DWT) is a spatial frequency transformation that has been widely used for analysis, elimination and fusion in image processing applications. It has been recognized that while the DWT offers an excellent combined spatial and frequency resolution, the DWT suffers from change variance. Several adaptations have been made to the DWT to produce an invariant form of displacement. Firstly, an exact displacement invariance has been achieved using the Non-Discrete Discrete Aspect Transform (UDWT). However, the UDWT variant suffers from a considerably excessive representation along with a lack of directional selectivity. More recently, the Dual Tree Complex Wavelet Transformation (DT-CWT) has given a more compact representation, offering almost invariance of displacement. The DT-CWT also offers improved directional selectivity (6 directional sub-bands per scale) and complex value coefficients that are useful for magnitude / phase analysis within the transformation domain. This paper presents two undefined forms of the DT-CWT that combine the benefits of UDWT (exact translational invariance, a one-to-one relationship between all coefficients co-located at all scales) and DT-CWT (improved directional selectivity and Complex subbands).
