Design and Implementation of a Digital Parking
Lot Management System
This project aims at implementing a digital vehicle management system using radio
frequency identification (RFID) technology. This project plans to enhance the
utilization of parking space and help user check the availability of the parking space remotely as the
system is connected to the Internet. There are four stages of completing this project. The first stage
consists of embedding the code into a tag and assigning the same to a car. the data is read from the RFID tag to the microcontroller in the second stage. the data is uploaded from
microcontroller to the Ethernet network in the third stage. The final stage is to keep a track of vacancies of the parking
spaces.

Introduction
The RFID kit used in this project includes
RFID windshield tags and RFID readers. The RFID reader is connected to a microcontroller in the
control office where the system is connected to the Internet. When a car with
enabled RFID windshield tag drives up to the gate, the RFID reader will automatically read the
information from tag through the built in antenna. and the read information will be delivered to the
microcontroller where the information will be verified. If the information received matches the
information in the database, the control office will send a command to open the gate of the parking lot. The number of
cars in the parking lot and the number of available spaces will be updated online immediately so that
remote user can get the correct parking information.

Introduction to RFID:
RFID is a technology that incorporates the use of electromagnetic or electrostatic coupling in the radio
frequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum to uniquely identify an object, animal, or a person. The man components of an RFID system are:
- An RFID tag “ transponder.
The RFID tag is activated when it passes through a radio
frequency field and sends out the programmed response. It has a chip that is
programmed with the information that uniquely identifies the tag.
- An RFID reader “ transceiver.
RFID readers are the electronic components that transmit and/or receive the RF waves used to
communicate with the tags. The primary components of the reader are an antenna, IC board, and
memory.

Design of the system
The four stages in which the project is implemented are:
1)Writing into the tag:In this stage, RFID tag is
embedded with unique identification code and is assigned to a car.
2)Reading from the tag: The information from the tag is read during the car parking.
3)Data feed to the microcontroller: The data from the RFID reader is transferred to the
microcontroller for the actual comparison of data and further processes. RS232 or UART media is used for this.
4)Data transfer to Ethernet: This consists of the transfer of data from the
microcontroller to an Ethernet port for the purposes of displaying information for remote people
regarding the availability of parking spaces.
5)Tracking the count. To properly utilize the parking lot, the number of the cars presented in the
parking lot is tracked using microcontrollers.
- A communication protocol for the information transferred.

Hardware setup
The selected Paramountâ„¢s RFID kit is a plug and play device and it has one RS-232 cable and one USB
cable. The USB connection is used for powering up the RFID reader. The tags are written using Mifare
Read & Write software tool which has options to write the tag information in Hexadecimal as well as in ASCII. The Embedded Ethernet Development Kit can be connected to the Ethernet network using a standard
Ethernet cable or directly to a PC using a crossover cable. For a PC to recognize an embedded system on a network, its IP address and subnet mask need to be configured.
Microcontroller and ethernet : Connect the AB4 Ethernet Development Board to the C8051F120 Microcontroller target board at J24. By making use of ribbon cable connect the USB debug adapter to the C8051F120 target board at the JTAG header. Connect the one end of the USB cable to the available USB port of the PC. Connect the other end of the USB cable into the USB connector of the debug adapter. And then Connect the AC/DC adapter to the C8051F120 target board at P1.

Design and Implementation of a Digital Parking
Lot Management System

Abstract - This project aims at implementing a digital vehicle management system using radio
frequency identification (RFID) technology. This digital vehicle management system will enhance the
utilization of parking space and help user check the availability of the parking space remotely since the
system is connected to the Internet. The project will be implemented in four stages. The first stage
consists of embedding the code into a tag and assigning the same to a car. The second stage is reading
the data from the RFID tag to the microcontroller. In the third stage, the data is uploaded from
microcontroller to the Ethernet network. The final stage is to keep a track of vacancies of the parking
spaces.
I. Introduction
According to the U.S. Bureau of Transit/Transportation statistics for the year of 2006, there are
250,851,833 registered passenger vehicles in the United States. These 251 million vehicles include cars,
motor cycles, SUVs and pick-up trucks. The New York Times magazine states that approximately a
million passenger vehicles are introduced into the roads each year in the United States, which ultimately
leads to a parking problem due to limited availability of spaces. A survey conducted by one of the car
manufacturing company, Bavarian Motor Works (BMW), shows that 20% of the inner traffic of major
cities across the nation is in search of parking space.
At Indiana State University (ISU), 1400 parking spaces are available to the students as against that more
than 4000 parking passes have been issued to students in the year of 2008. The parking system at ISU,
just as the most normal parking systems, does not track the number of cars present in the parking lot, to
say nothing of providing the information of vacancies online. A student has to drive into the parking lot
and to search for available space, which results in a waste of time, effort and fuel.

ABSTRACT
This project aims to design a three tier parking system.
The project will keep track of the duration for which cars are parked. The lowest tier will have those cars parked for short interval (few mins). The middle tier will contain cars which will remain for 1-3 hrs. Cars which will remain in the lot for more than 3hrs will be in upper tier.
It is based on the technology which takes a picture of the approaching car when it is at the main gate. The system will assign a password to the user (visiting for the first time). After the user has entered the password the project will check for space in the parking area. If space is available the electronic main gate will open
And user will park the car inside.
If there is no space in the area the main gate will not open. In this case the system will check for the car parked for the longest interval & notify its user that it should remove the car & park it in the upper tier of the parking lot.
If the user inputs the wrong password the main gate will not open and signal will be sent to the user that the password is wrong.
AIM of the PROJECT
The aim is to develop a technologically advanced parking system which will implement various innovations. The system will allow maximizing of parking capabilities .The system will inform drivers if they are available at the parking spot and prevent unauthorised vehicles from entering the parking lot. The unauthorised vehicles will be tracked by a camera which will record the corresponding vehicles license plates. The images will be transmitted to a recording device
Software Requirements
The following software tools will be used:-
• Turbo c++ & JCreator 2.5
• Mozilla Firefox browser
• Web server
• MY SQL for database management
MODULE DESCRIPTION
The project will have the following modules:
1. User profile module:- This will have information of all users using the parking lot.
2. Device Management Module:-This will take care of the various technological devices like web camera, electronic gates, cctv cameras , wireless devices and so forth.
3. Time management module:-This module will keep a track of time for which cars are parked in the three tiers of the parking area.
4. Geographical module:-This will be used to find area in the city which is best suited to build a parking lot as large as the one proposed.
5. Security Module:- This will ensure that unauthorised vehicles are not parked. The system will inform drivers if they are available at the parking spot and prevent unauthorised vehicles from entering the parking lot. The unauthorised vehicles will be tracked by a camera which will record the corresponding vehicles license plates. The images will be transmitted to a recording device.
6. Design Module:-Modelling and design.
7. Cost Management Module:-This module will aim to prepare a cost efficient system and at sane time will not compromise with the use of technology. It will have the financial budget of the project.
Design Requirements
Basic input and output:-
• Number of vehicles entering/exiting the parking lot
• Number of violators.
Scenarios:-
1. Entrance with a valid Id number. The number will be provided to the user who visits for the first time by the machine .The number would have to be provided at the entrance for entry. If the user gives a wrong id num he will not allowed park the vehicle in the parking area. In case the user forgets his id no he has provide the wrong id to the machine at the gate five times and his id will be changed. Failing to remember the id for the second time will lead to prohibition of the user from entering the area in future.
2. Entrance speed regulated by speed bumps. This is done to ensure single vehicle entry.
3. Entry/exit. On entry and exit of a vehicle the automobile counter will be triggered which will page link to the comp software to keep the system updated with no of parking spots available.
4. Security arrangements and rule violation. If two vehicles enter at a time with a speed of more than 10 km/hr a snapshot of the violators will be taken at the main gate.
