A compressed air vehicle (CAV) is powered by an air motor, using compressed air, which is stored in a tank. Instead of mixing fuel with air and burning it in the engine to drive pistons with hot expanding gases, the compressed air vehicles use the expansion of the compressed air to drive the pistons. One manufacturer claims to have designed an engine that is 90 percent efficient.

Compressed air propulsion can also be incorporated into hybrid systems, such as with electric battery propulsion. This type of system is called a hybrid-pneumatic electric propulsion. In addition, regenerative braking can also be used together with this system.

The compressed air bicycle is an eco-friendly bicycle that uses compressed air as a source of energy. Here the normal piston motor is replaced by a turbine. The turbine is used as an energy converter in this bicycle, the pneumatic energy of compressed air is converted into mechanical work with the help of the turbine. Air under pressure having energy is introduced into the turbine. As this compressed air enters the turbine, compressed air expands and releases the energy that is used to move the turbine blade and produce working output through the turbine shaft. Shaft is coupled to the rear wheel axle with the help of the gear arrangement. The efficiency of the compressed air bicycle is increased by the implementation of an air pressure amplifier and a pneumatic shock absorber connected to the compressed air storage tank to maintain constant pressure and the volume of compressed air.
