5th generation mobile networks or 5th generation wireless systems, abbreviated 5G, are the next proposed telecommunications standards beyond the current 4G / IMT-Advanced standards. An initial chip design by Qualcomm in October 2016, the Snapdragon X50 5G modem, supports operations in the 28 GHz band, also known as millimeter wave (mmW) spectrum. With 800 MHz bandwidth support, it is designed to support maximum download speeds of up to 35.46 gigabits per second. The 5G planning aims at greater capacity than the current 4G, which allows a higher density of mobile broadband users, and support for device-to-device communication, ultra reliable and massive. 5G research and development also aims to lower 4G computer latency and lower battery consumption, for better Internet application of things.
5G simply represents the fifth generation and refers to the next and latest mobile wireless standard based on the IEEE 802.11ac broadband technology standard, although a formal standard for 5G has not yet been established. The current state of 5G technology for cellular systems is much in the early stages of development. Many companies are looking at technologies that could be used to become part of the system. In addition to this, several universities have created 5G research units focused on the development of technologies for 5G.
In addition to this, standardization bodies, in particular 3GPP, are development aware, but are not yet actively planning 5G systems. Many of the technologies that will be used for 5G will begin to appear in the systems used for 4G and then as the new 5G cellular system begins to be formulated in a more concrete way, will be incorporated into the new 5G cellular system. The main problem with 5G technology is that there is such a huge variation in requirements: fast downloads to small data requirements for IoT that any system will not be able to meet these needs. As a result, a layer approach is likely to be adopted. As one commentator put it: 5G is not just a mobile technology. It is ubiquitous access to high and low data rate services.
