INTRODUCTION
Chain drive is a way of transmitting mechanical power from one place to another.
It is often used to convey power to the wheels of a vehicle, particularly bicycles and motorcycles.
It is also used in a wide variety of machines besides vehicles.

The power is conveyed by a roller chain, known as the drive chain or transmission chain, passing over a sprocket gear, with the teeth of the gear meshing with the holes in the links of the chain.
The gear is turned, and this pulls the chain putting mechanical force into the system.

Power is output by simply rotating the chain, which can be used to lift or drag objects.
Idler wheel
Gears that do not put power into the system or transmit it out are generally known as Idler-wheels.
An idler-wheel drive is a system used to transmit the rotation of the main shaft of a motor to another rotating device.
An idler gear is a gear wheel that is inserted between two or more other gear wheels.
BELT DRIVE
A belt is a loop of flexible material used to page link two or more rotating shafts mechanically.
Belts may be used as a source of motion, to transmit power efficiently, or to track relative movement.

Chain drives in bicycles is often used to convey power to the wheels of a vehicle, particularly bicycles.
AUTO MOBILES
Chain drive was a popular power transmission system from the earliest days of the automobile.
MOTOR CYCLES
Chain drive versus belt drive or use of a driveshaft is a fundamental design decision in motorcycle design.
MOTORS
Internal combustion engines often use chain drive to power the timing chain used to drive overhead camshaft valve trains.
ADVANTAGES
1. As no slip takes place during chain drive, hence perfect velocity ratio is obtained.
2. Since the chains are made of metal, therefore they occupy less space in width than a belt or rope drive.
3. It may be used for both long as well as short distances.
4. It gives a high transmission efficiency (upto 98 percent).
5. It gives less load on the shafts.
6. It has the ability to transmit motion to several shafts by one chain only.
7. It transmits more power than belts.
8. It permits high speed ratio of 8 to 10 in one step.
9. It can be operated under adverse temperature and atmospheric conditions.
DISADVANTAGES
1. The production cost of chains is relatively high.
2. The chain drive needs accurate mounting and careful maintenance, particularly lubrication and slack adjustment.
3. The chain drive has velocity fluctuations especially when unduly stretched.
