Vaastu shastra and feng shui are ancient and sacred bodies of knowledge that reveal the connection between human beings and the dwellings they inhabit. In shastra vaastu, as in feng shui, the focus is on the well-being of the human being, which can only be achieved when we are in harmony with nature and the universal flow of energy.
When hunting for the house, one usually falls in love with a home that resonates the strongest on an emotional level. Listening to phrases like "I really feel like this is the only one" is as common as you get and the house nails the fact that while other tangible aspects such as location and cost is devoted to processing the decision, Make or break That decision is how we feel about it in the end.
A house is more than a building with walls, it is filled with the memories and the energies of the people who have passed through. It is this energy that calls us and if it is in tune with ours, it echoes strongly. It is intangible, but it remains an advocate of the good life.
Ancient "sciences" such as the best known Feng Shui, but the ancient Vaastu Shastra, seek to use this environmental energy to achieve a good and balanced life for the inhabitants. Although they have similar ideals, both are unique in their principles and implementation.
Their countries of origin (China and India, respectively) are, in this day and age, irrelevant to the modern person who seeks spirituality in all things.
The only way to decide what is the best school of thought for you is to understand what makes them different;
Feng means wind and Shui means water. In Chinese culture, wind and water are associated with good health and wealth.
Vaastu means housing / habitat and Shastra means science. In Indian culture, good Vaastu will ensure well-being in all aspects of life
Both ancient sciences allow to follow some basic principles to live in harmony to maintain the peace and the stability.
The basic principles:
- Energy: Both seek to increase the flow of energy known as 'chi' in Feng Shui and 'prana' in Vaastu Shastra. Feng Shui believes that a place determines its fortune, while Vaastu states that any energy in the place can be used to design a good life.
- Water: Feng Shui believes in the importance of water, which is why water in some way, is always included in the design of the property that adhere to those principles. The direction of the body of water probably varies for different people in different places. However, for Vaastu Shastra, the natural elements of the land are governed under a set of standard rules. Water, which is so important, is usually found in the Northeast, independently.
- Colors: Both sciences emphasize the use of colors as corrective actions for specific situations.
- Role of the kitchen: The kitchen has a very important role. As a place of "fire," it is important to maintain the balance of life.
- Deity: Both China and India have traditional concepts related to idolatry symbolizing forces of nature, eg. Air, water and so on. Both sciences, therefore, recommend an address for worship with a deity representative of those directions, located in it.
- Some of the common healing measures like mirrors and precious stones have been used by both.
- Both sciences use five (different) elements to locate defects and ensure that the energies balance each other.
The differences:
- Vaastu Shastra bases its recommendations on all the universal elements such as air, water, fire, earth and space. Feng Shui uses wood and metal over land and space.
- Feng Shui varies depending on the person and location. For example, a house can be very auspicious for person A, but not auspicious for person B based on their spiritual analysis. Vaastu Shastra states that regardless of the person, the house will be good as long as its principles are respected.
- Feng Shui aims to adjust the environment to adapt and improve its aura to create a good positive flow and while Vaastu Shastra seeks to align everything from a universal perspective.
From this, it is easy to see where the two schools of thought converge and where they go in different directions. As a result, it makes it difficult to get a combination of both if they are undecided.
