The Whitworth quick return mechanism converts the rotary motion into reciprocating motion, but unlike the crank and the slider, the forward forward motion is slower than the return stroke. This is why it is called a fast return mechanism. A rapid return mechanism is an apparatus that converts circular motion into circular motion in reciprocating motion in presses and forming machines, which are used to form metal stocks on flat surfaces , Along mechanical engineering. The mechanism consists of an arm attached to a rotating disk that moves at a controlled uniform speed. Unlike the crank, the arm of the mechanism operates at a different speed than the disc. By making the disk operate at a different speed than the joined arm, productivity increases because the amount of time required for a cut is reduced. The design of this mechanism specializes in vector calculus and physical aspects of kinematics (study of motion without the effects of forces) and dynamics (study of forces affecting motion).
This is the simplest version of Whitworth quick return mechanism. These mechanisms are used when the reciprocating movement in the return stroke is much faster than the forward motion. A machine shop shaper tool is a good application for this mechanism. The back and back stroke lengths can be changed from zero to predetermined maximum length by changing the location of the adjusting pin as shown in the video.
