phd research topics in vlsi pdf

We are a research group at DA-IICT working on various aspects of VLSI design. Our research interests cover low-power processor Architectures, Low power circuit design techniques, Analog and mixed-signal circuit design, RF device modeling and RF circuit design, Rapid prototyping of Digital Systems, Industrial Automation, reconfigurable processors, Digital Arithmetic, Advanced Processor Architectures , VLSI Implementation of Speech and Image processing algorithms, Biomedical signal processor design, testing and formal verification, memory design, Embedded VLSI, asynchronous circuits, CAD tools, Graph theory and Optimisation problems in VLSI.

The work carried out by the group encompasses various design styles ranging from FPGA based prototyping to Full custom design. Depending on the application, the implementations involve ASICs, Full Custom Design, FPGA based prototyping, Embedded design using FPGAs etc.
There are currently six faculty members and one Research Engineer involved with the activities of the VLSI group. There are currently about fifty undergraduate students, thirty post-graduate students and one PHD student doing various research projects in VLSI. In the last three years, the research work has resulted in more than thirty papers in international and national conferences.
Today, the importance of research particularly at the PhD level is well-recognized to be a key feature for achieving leadership in any field. This is undoubtedly true in the area of VLSI as in any other. In particular, in India, this is a crying need, especially in Academic institutions where most engineering colleges are starved of high quality PhD level teachers.
An important factor in recent times has been the growth of networking facilities through the World-Wide Web. We propose to use this resource to advantage. It would be the objective of this workshop to call Research scholars nation-wide so as to facilitate the formation of a network among them for exchange of ideas and resources, both human and physical, available to them. It would serve not only as a base for exchange and clarification of ideas, but also as a Resource Center for obtaining help on use of sophisticated tools, for assistance in journal article search, and for networking with undergraduate and postgraduate students elsewhere for implementation of basic ideas.

For PhD students (max. 2) interested in pursuing research in the area of VLSI design
(Electrical Engg. Dept.):
Research area, and ongoing research activity in the area at IITGn.
Research area: VLSI DESIGN
The broad research problems will be to deal with issues involved in modern VLSI
designs. Some of the specific research areas are:
1. CAD tools for asynchronous design, synthesis, analysis and optimization
2. Low power VLSI design
Objectives of the Ph.D project and expectations
Each student is expected to take courses specific to his/her research topic, apart from the
course credit requirements of the institute, to develop a solid foundation for research.
He/She is expected to do a detail review of the literature in the particular area of research
in the first year of his/her joining the institute.
CAD Tools for asynchronous design: Research will be carried out to develop CAD
tools for asynchronous circuits – for their automated design, synthesis and analysis. It
would be worthwhile to consider the possibilities of integrating such a tool with mainline
VLSI design flow so that it allows design and analysis of mixed (synchronous and
asynchronous) designs. The problem would also include exploring possibilities of
optimizing performance of large fully-synchronous VLSI designs by appropriate
synchronous and asynchronous domain partitioning.
Low Power VLSI design: The problem of low power VLSI design is useful in several
modern appliances such as mobiles, laptops, etc. This research problem includes
exploring possibilities of using asynchronous circuit design to reduce power consumption
in a chip. However, research will not be limited to use of asynchronous design, and may
also include novel methods of clock generation and distribution, appropriate chip
partitioning, design of novel circuits which consume less power, methods of reducing
leakage currents etc. The solution will finally be implemented on silicon to prove its
usefulness.
Expected educational background and domain knowledge:
- B.E/B.Tech (Electrical/Electronics) with first class
- M.E/MTech. (Electrical/Electronics) with first class
- Software knowledge of C, MATLAB,Verilog or VHDL is essential.
- Knowledge of VLSI design tools is desirable.
