Introduction: ► There are many aspects to getting Bluetooth technology integrated into a mobile PC. ► Here the technology is adopted to make the integration process as smooth and predictable as possible. ► Some design decisions were made to simplify the integration tasks for the notebook computer manufacturer is also discussed. ► While this paper is geared towards the notebook PC space, many of the ideas to other Bluetooth applications, and beyond that, to other technology integration activities.
What is Bluetooth?

► Bluetooth is a wireless technology that enables any electrical device to wirelessly communicate in the 2.5 GHz (license free) frequency band. ► It allows devices such as mobile phones, headsets, PDA's and portable computers to communicate and send data to each other without the need for wires or cables to page link to devices together. ► It has been specifically designed as a low cost, low power, radio technology, which is particularly suited to the short range Personal Area Network (PAN) application.
Features of Bluetooth:
► Operates in the 2.4GHz frequency band without a license for wireless communication.
► Real-time data transfer usually possible between 10-100m.
► Close proximity not required as with infrared data (IrDA) communication devices.
► Supports point-to-point wireless connections without cables between mobile phones and personal computers.
Computer requirements
► Bluetooth USB Dongle
► An internal notebook Bluetooth card
► A personal computer must have a Bluetooth adapter in order to be able to communicate with other Bluetooth devices.
► While some desktop computers and most recent laptops come with a built- in Bluetooth adapter.
► If we compare Bluetooth with IrDA which requires a separate adapter for each device where as Bluetooth allows multiple devices to communicate with a computer over a single adapter.
Operating System Support
► Apple has supported Bluetooth since Mac OS X version 10.2 released in 2002. ► As for Microsoft platforms, Windows XP Service Pack 2 and later releases have native support for Bluetooth. ► Previous versions required the users to install their Bluetooth adapter's own drivers, which were not directly supported by Microsoft. ► Microsoft's own Bluetooth dongles (that are packaged with their Bluetooth computer devices) have no external drivers and thus require at least Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Specifications:
► The Bluetooth specification was developed in 1994 by Jaap Haartsen and Sven Mattisson, who were working for Ericsson Mobile Platforms in Lund, Sweden.
► The specifications were formalized by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). The SIG was formally announced on May 20, 1998. Today it has a membership over 7000 companies worldwide.
► It was established by Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Toshiba, and Nokia, and later joined by many other companies.
Bluetooth vs Wi-Fi in networking
► Wi-Fi requires more expensive hardware and higher power consumption. It use the same frequency range, but employ different modulation techniques.
► While Bluetooth is a replacement for a variety of applications, Wi-Fi is a replacement only for local area network access.
► Bluetooth is often thought of as wireless USB, whereas Wi-Fi is wireless Ethernet, both operating at much lower bandwidth than the cable systems they are trying to replace.
