In India, December 22nd has been declared National Mathematics Day. The statement was made by Dr Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India, during the opening ceremony of the celebrations to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the birth of Srinivasa Ramanujan held at the Centennial Auditorium of the University of Madras on 26 February 2012. Dr. Manmohan Singh also announced that the 2012 CE year will be celebrated as the National Year of Mathematics.
Indian mathematician genius Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on December 22, 1887 and died on April 26, 1920. It was in recognition of his contribution to mathematics that the Indian government decided to celebrate Ramanujan's birthday as National Mathematics Day every Year and celebrate 2012 as the National_Mathematics_Year. National Mathematics Day is celebrated with numerous educational events in Indian schools and universities.
