Qawwali (Nasta'līq: قوالی) is a form of Sufi devotional music in South Asia. It is popular in the Punjab and Sindh regions of Pakistan, in many parts of northern India, including Hyderabad and Delhi, and many parts of Bangladesh. It is part of a musical tradition that goes back more than 700 years.
Originally performed mainly in Sufi shrines or dargahs throughout South Asia, it has also gained popularity. The music of Qawwali received the international exposure through the work of the late Pakistani singers Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Sabri Brothers, largely due to several launches on the real-world label, followed by live performances at WOMAD's festivals . Other famous singers from Qawwali include Amjad Farid Sabri from Pakistan, Bahauddin Qutbuddin and Aziz Mian.
The Sufi saint of Delhi, Amir Khusro Dehlavi, of the order Chísti of the Sufis, is attributed the fusion of the Persian, Arab, Turkish and Indian musical traditions in the late thirteenth century in India to create Qawwali as we know it today. The word Sama is often still used in Central Asia and Turkey to refer to forms very similar to Qawwali, and in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, the formal name used for a Qawwali session is Mehfil-e-Sama. Qaul (Arabic: قول) is a "(prophet) statement," Qawwāl is someone who often repeats (sings) a Qaul, Qawwāli is what a Qawwāl sings.
