A Graphic Package is an application that can be used to create and manipulate images in a computer. Or it can defined as an essentially kits that allow graphic artists to create several type of computer generated art work such as painting and drawing as well as photographs.

TWO MAIN TYPES OF GRAPHIC PACKAGES

Painting packages.
Drawing packages.
Painting Packages: A painting package produces image by changing the colour of pixel on the screen.

These are coded as a pattern of bits to create a bit mapped graphics files.

Bits mapped graphic are used for images such as scanned photographs or pictures taken with digital camera.

ADVANTAGES.

The main advantage offered by painting packages is that individual pixels can be changed which makes very detailed editing possible.

DISADVANTAGES

Individuals part of an image cannot be resized.
0nly the whole picture can be increased or decreased in size.
Information has to be stored about very pixel in an image which produces files that use large amounts of backing storage space. Eg of bitmapped image MS paint, PC paint brush, Adobe Photoshop.
DRAWING PACKAGES

A drawing package produces image that are made up from coloured lines and shapes such as circles, squares and rectangle.
When an image is saved it is stored in a vector graphics file as a series of instructions, which can be used to recreate it.
MAIN ADVANTAGES OF VECTOR GRAPHICS ARE:

That the vector or graphics is the same with drawing package.
They use less storage space that bitmapped graphics.
Each part of an image is treated as a separate object, which means that individual part can be easily modified.
DISADVANTAGES OR DEMERITS

They do not look as realistic as bitmap graphics. Eg of drawing package include Corel Draw, Computer Aided Design [CAD], Micro Graphics Designer.
COMMON FEATURES OF GRAPHIC PACKAGES.

Drawing straight lines and free hand lines
Drawing regular pre –defined shapes like squares, rectangles and circles using a special tools.
Entering texts and changing the style and size of font.
Changing the size of an object or scaling.
USES OF GRAPHIC PACKAGES.

Graphic packages are used to create, edit, display and point graphic images.
Graphic package are used to design letter head paper, Birthday cards, wedding cards, Complimentary cards, invitation cards, logos, banners etc.
They are used in designing professional art works.
