hydraulic intensifier is a hydraulic machine to transform hydraulic energy at low pressure in a volume reduced to a higher pressure

Such a machine can be built by mechanically linking the two pistons, each working in a cylinder separated with a different diameter. As the pistons are mechanically connected, their strength and their stroke length are the same. If the diameters are different, the hydraulic pressure in each cylinder varies in the same ratio as their areas: the small piston giving birth at a pressure more high. When the pressure is inversely proportional to the surface, it will be inversely proportional to the square of the diameter.

The volume of work of the brightness amplifier is limited by the stroke of the piston. This limits the amount of work that can be done by a single stroke of the intensifier. They are not machines reciprocating (namely running machines multitime constantly) and therefore all of their work must be carried out by a single stroke. This limits their usefulness somewhat, to machines that can perform their tasks in one fell swoop. They are often used where a powerful hydraulic cylinder is needed, but there is not enough space to fit the size of cylinder which would be normally required for the force required lifting and the pressure of the system available. The use of an intensifier, mounted outside the cylinder, allows a higher to get pressure and thus a small cylinder used for the same lift force. Image intensifiers are also used in machinery such as hydraulic presses, where a higher pressure is required and appropriate nutrition is already available. [2]

A few small intensifiers were built with a stepped piston. This is a piston both ends of two different diameters, each working in a different cylinder end. This construction is simple and compact, which requires a total length a little more than twice the race. It is also still required to provide two seals, one for each piston, and to evacuate the area between them. A leak of the pressure in the volume between the pistons would transform the machine in a single efficient piston with equal surface of each side, thus beating the intensifier effect.

A compact and popular intensifier mechanical form is the form of concentric cylinder, as shown [1] in this design, a piston and cylinder are reversed. Place the piston of large diameter, resulting in a smaller piston, it leads instead of a mobile cylinder smaller than fit on a fixed piston. This design is compact, and can still be done in a little over twice the race. It has the great advantage that that there is no "piston rod" and the effective distance between the two pistons is short, which allows a much lighter construction, without risk of bending or interference.

In the example shown, the two pistons are about 1: 2 in diameter, which gives a mixture 1: 4 increased pressure. It should be noted that it is the piston diameter effective, i.e. the diameter of the gasket that is important. Cylinders here are relieved beyond the seam and are large diameter for easy operation. Although the mobile cylinder bore is about ¾ of the outside diameter, not ½, it is its seal diameter that matters, and not his game bore internal.

The famous engineer Harry Ricardo started his career working in his grandfather, the practice of civil engineering by Alexander Rendel. [2] at the time where they have been involved in the construction of bridges in India, which required hydraulic lift, lifting and riveting equipment. As the existing transport infrastructure was poor, all facilities used on the site needed to be lightweight and easily transportable. Machines should also be connected to their source of hydraulic energy by a flexible tube, which has limited their pressure of work at approximately 500 psi. At that time, the equipment of modern shipyard was using pressures up to 2000 psi. This high pressure equipment was smaller and lighter than the larger variety at low pressure, a desirable characteristic for this construction work. Ricardo innovation was to clarify the use of portable hydraulic intensifiers for these tools, which allows the use of the form improved at high pressure, even if their offer was low pressure through a hose. These intensifiers have been so successful that eventually hundreds were provided and used
