In general terms, the goal in segmentation of the cardiac image is to delineate the outer and inner walls of the heart to segment outward or all or part of the organ's boundaries. This work will focus on MRI images as they are most commonly used in cardiac segmentation - as a result of accurate morphological information and better soft tissue contrast they provide. This cardiac segmentation information is very useful as it facilitates physical measurements that provide metrics useful for cardiac diagnosis such as infra-cured volumes, ventricular volumes, ejection fraction, myocardial mass, cardiac motion, and the like. This task is difficult because of the intensity and texture of the similarities between different cardiac and background structures at the top of some noisy artifacts present in MR images. So far, several researchers have proposed different techniques to solve some of the pressing problems. This seminar paper presents an overview of the representative techniques of segmentation of medical images. The paper also highlights the preferred approaches for segmentation of the four cardiac chambers: the left ventricle (LV), the right ventricle (RV), the left atrium (LA), and the right atrium (RA) short.
